What I appreciated most here is the shift from “why am I failing to do this?” to “what state is this task creating in me?”
The article is strongest when it treats procrastination as something to understand rather than moralise. The short-term relief piece especially helps explain why the pattern can repeat even when we know perfectly well it costs us later.
Yes, that's exactly the shift I was after. "Why am I failing?" keeps you stuck in judgment. "What state is this task putting me in?" opens a door. Thank you for reading it so closely. 🫀
Great piece! The threat response for me is based on shame. I acknowledge the shame and speak directly to the little kid in me directly. I work with her, no longer against it. I also acknowledge the threat response is a dopamine release , and I mine dopamine as a hobby 😂. I now recognize this cycle but it is so difficult for me to remove that loop! I love the permission this peice to not view procrastination as a character flaw. It’s a tough battle. ❤️
"I mine dopamine as a hobby" (love it!) 😂 I feel seen.
And what you're doing — turning toward the little kid instead of fighting her — that's the whole thing. The loop doesn't disappear, but the shame around it can. You're already doing the real work. ❤️
